Oral health is listed as one of the single greatest unmet health needs in the USA.  Increasing awareness of the importance of oral and systemic heath, and the disparity in care, are leading to new trends in healthcare delivery.  This course will discuss the evolving role of dental hygienists and workforce models which impact us as preventative oral healthcare providers.  Dental Practice Acts will be reviewed with the goal of increasing access to care.  Alternative workforce models (including the Registered Dental Hygienist in Alternative Practice & the new Health Workforce Pilot Project) and oral health care delivery systems throughout the nation that address care for the underserved will also be discussed.  Changes in our Scopes of Practice - including allowable duties, practice settings, employers, and supervision levels - will be considered affecting all hygienists in California.

A native born San Franciscan, Lisa received her first Associate of Science degree at City College of SF, majoring in math.  Recognizing a desire to work more closely with people in a health-related field, Lisa earned her Certificate of Dental Hygiene, Associate of Science degree from Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, in 1980.  Graduating with honors, she was a recipient of the 1980 Bank of America Community College Award.  Lisa has practiced as a clinical dental hygienist in both general and periodontal offices, and continues to practice today as a substitute in a few select offices.  In 2000, she became an adjunct clinical instructor for the Dental Hygiene Department of Foothill College.  A proud member of ADHA throughout her dental hygiene career, Lisa is active in her local component, Peninsula, as well as at the state level.  She has served in various CDHA leadership roles, as an ADHA Delegate, and is the current President of CDHA.  With family and friends, Lisa and her husband Bob enjoy downhill skiing, golf and traveling.  When time permits, she relaxes by reading, cooking and the occasional spa excursion, and confesses to being a bonafide chocoholic!

Course Overview

The 21st century patient will often present significant oral and dental challenges associated with environmental factors, systemic interactions and multifactorial links to the progression of dental disease.  Knowledge of a condition’s etiology, recognition, intervention, management, education and prevention can assist the dental professional in being more informed.

This presentation will provide a detailed overview on dietary habits and their insult related to the growing incidence of demineralization and acid-related erosive decay.  Research has been unfolding discoveries associated with GERD and an increased consumption of high-energy drinks, sugary sports drinks, carbonated drinks and their mistakenly associated relationship with being healthy.  A discussion will surround these negative dental consequences along with the latest misconceptions that mega-sized drinks, snacks and dried fruits consumed regularly are consistent with good health.

This program will additionally outline risk assessment protocols with effective homecare regimens regarding the prevalence of xerostomia observed from medication interactions, autoimmune disorders, systemic disease and the misrepresentation and use of OTC products.  Today’s realistic solutions will be discussed addressing the needs expressed by the patient in your chair.  Recommendations designed to achieve optimal oral health with the latest research-based technology will be shared along with strategies for implementing preventive measures.
